Description

  • David Teniers the Younger
  • A barn interior with a peasant and his flock of sheep and cattle, a group of peasants drinking and smoking in the background
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is slightly less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a rather stiff relining. A tiny fleck of paint loss is visible along the upper left edge. The paint layer is somewhat abraded in places, mainly in the brownish hues, e.g. in the horses and figures in the background on the right, in the centre background, and in the fence and cow on the left. The sheep and figure un the foreground, however, are still nicely preserved. A restored and retouched vertical tear of approx. 3 cm. is visible in the lower centre. Tiny retouched paint losses are visible in the background figures, in the lower right corner and in the centre left. Minor strengthening can be observed in the background figures, in the horses and cows. The paint layer is under an old and slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is largely impeded by the varnish layer, but does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and reveals an addition small retouched paint loss in the figure's sleeve. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame with tiny pin holes and paint losses. (MW)
