Condition
The actual painting is softer and less blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel probably consists of one plank and is marouflé. The panel has been cradled. A very thin vertical split of approx. 4 cm. is visible in the lower right corner, but otherwise, no damages seem to be apparent. The paint layer seems to be in good condition. Minor retouchings can be observed in the Virgin's hands and forehead. The paint surface is covered with a slightly dirty and shiny layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals additional tiny retouchings around the Virgin's eyes, in her neck and dress, lower centre.
Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame with architectural motifs, with a few tiny chips. (MW)

Catalogue Note
This painting repeats with some minor variations the composition of a work by Massys in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp (inv. no. 242). The original composition is part of a diptych portraying the Virgin at Prayer and Christ our Saviour.
