Condition

The illustration is representative for the actual painting. The canvas is relined. The paint surface has somewhat flattened, but is in good and stable condition. Retouchings in the sky and clouds are visible to the naked eye. The paint surface is under a transparent varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light confirms the abovementioned retouchings in the sky and reveals additional ones in the two main ships, especially the two-master in the centre. Smaller retouchings and strengthening appear in the ships in the background as well as minor scattered spots in the waves. The varnish layer seems to be unevenly cleaned. Offered in an ebony with faux tortoise shell veneer inlay, in good condition. (JD)
