Condition

The actual painting is somewhat less red and overall softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of 2 planks, joined horizontally, and is lightly bevelled on the upper and right edge. It appears to be slightly cut on the left edge. The join has been reinforced with 8 small battons and 2 vertical strips of wood of approx. 20 cm. No damages seem to be apparent. The paint layer has grown slightly thin in the background, but otherwise, seems to be in very good condition. The join has been retouched. A few very tiny retouchings can be observed in the central flowers, and in the foreground lower centre and lower right. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish layer, and there's some surface dirt. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals a few additional small retouchings in the white tulip on the right, in the background centre right and upper left, and along the upper edge. Offered in a decorative carved wood frame, in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

No certain prototype is known for this composition, but a version sold, London, Sotheby's, 28 November 1956, lot 29 (present whereabouts unknown), is considered by Ertz from photographs to possibly be from Jan Brueghel's own hand.1 Another very similar composition to the present lot was sold, Amsterdam, Christie's, 11 May 1994, lot 170, as by Jan Breughel the Younger.
