Description
- Joos de Momper
- A mountainous landscape with horsemen and travellers in a horse-drawn wagon and a horse-drawn cart on a path, a watermill beyond
- oil on panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 10 July 1980, lot 86.
Condition
The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting.
The panel consists of 2 horizontal planks and is bevelled on the left and lower sides. The panel is possibly cut. The join has been reinforced on the reverse with 2 vertical strips of wood of approx. 8 cm. A horizonal strip of wood of approx. 8 cm. has been attached to the reverse to stabilise a thin crack in the lower right corner, as is visible to the front. The paint has been slightly abraded in the sky, allowing the pale ground to show through. Otherwise, the paint layer seems to be in very good condition, and particularly the figures have been wonderfully preserved.
Retouching and minor strengthening can be observed along the join, and in the background figures.
The paint layer is covered with a reasonably clear layer of varnish.
Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforesaid, and reveals additional strengthening in the figures, horses and carriage in the foreground, in the foliage to the left, and spots of retouching along the upper edge, and in the mountain in the centre.
Offered in a plain light wood cassetta frame with gilt fillets, with a few chips. (MW)
