Description

  • Jacob van Strij
  • A southern hilly landscape with shepherds resting with their herd, a view of ruins beyond
  • signed lower right: J. van StrĂ¿
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 7 March 1980, lot 105.

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of 2 planks, joined horizontally, and is flat and stable. The panel is lightly bevelled on all but the lower sides. The join has been reinforced with a thick strip of wood. The join has been retouched. There are a few tiny flecks of paint loss along the lower edge, due to the frame. A few small retouched paint losses are visible in the sky upper left. and along the lower edge, but otherwise, the paint layer is stable and in good condition. The impasto and texture of the highlights have been wonderfully preserved. Tiny retouchings can be observed in the sky upper right, in the foliage lower left, and in the cows. The paint surface is covered with a shiny and dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings, and reveals additional strengthening in the figures, in the goat, and in the foliage and grass in the foreground. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame with elaborate plaster gilt frame, with losses. (MW)
