Description

  • Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
  • Portrait of a man, bust length, wearing a brown coat and a beret
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is a little darker and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old effective relining. The paint surface is a little flat, but the brushwork in the highlights is still nicely preserved. The paint layer is a bit abraded in his coat and hair. There's a surface scratch in the upper left corner. A small retouched paint loss is visible in the upper right corner. Retouchings can be observed along the right and left edges. in the background centre left, in his neck and chin, and in the right side of his face. The paint layer is under a dirty and discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is inconclusive due to the varnish. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame, in good condition. (MW)
