Description

  • The Alchemist;The Collector
  • a pair, both oil on panel

Condition

The actual paintings are a bit darker and softer in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both panels consist of one plank, are flat and stable and unbevelled. In general, both paintings appear to be in good condition. The alchemist: the paint surface has grown slightly thin, mainly in the green and black tones. A thin vertical scratch of approximately 2 cm. is visible to the lower right. Tiny retouchings, relating older paint losses, are visible along the left edge, as well as very tiny retouchings in the man's hat and cloak. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings, and reveals small additional retouchings along the edges and on the table to the lower left. The collector: the paint surface has grown thin in the background, and in the man's costume. There's one tiny damage, resulting in a tiny paint loss to the lower right. Tiny retouchings, relating older paint losses are visible in the background to the upper right, as well as small retouchings in the man's cloak. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings, and reveals small additional retouchings in the background to the centre left and to the lower left, just above the book. Both paintings are covered with a thick layer of varnish and a fine layer of dirt. Both offered in a decorative gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (MW)
