Description

  • An amorous couple in a stone window, with an oriental carpet, a basket full of eggs and two broken egg-shells on the windowsill, an elderly lady in the background
  • bears signature and indistinct date lower left: Frans van Mieris 17.9
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is warmer and less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and bevelled to all sides. No damages are apparent, and the paint layer seems to be in good condition. An area of retouching is visible in the lower right corner, and in the lower left corner, and smaller retouchings can be observed in the foliage and flowers in the right and in the lady's chest and draperies. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty and glossy layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid and reveals a few additional tiny scattered retouchings, e.g. in the birdcage and in the lady's dress. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster wood frame, with a few paint losses. (MW)
