Description
- Portrait of a gentleman, bust length, wearing a gold-trimmed blue velvet coat, Dutch shipping in the background
- oil on canvas, oval
Condition
The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is unlined, but retains much of its bounce. Stretcher marks are visible along the edges. There is fine craquelure throughout which is beginning to lift in some areas. No major damages are apparent. The paint surface is under an unevenly cleaned layer of varnish, and there's some surface dirt. As is clearly visible in the catalogue illustration, the painting is partially cleaned and its original state has partially been revealed. The original paint layer is in fair condition. Scattered retouchings are visible throughout. But overall, the painting is in good restorable condition.
Offered in a black ebonised oval frame with a gilt fillet, in good condition. (MW)
