Description

  • Angelo Maria Rossi
  • Three ducks in a wooded landscape, wild mushrooms in the foreground
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative, although a little brighter, for the actual painting. The canvas has an old effective relining. No damages are apparent. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty and shiny layer of varnish. The paint is a little thin in the darker areas, but otherwise, is in excellent condition. The impasto in the highlights is wonderfully preserved. A small retouched paint loss is visible to the lower right. No retouchings are visible to the naked eye, but inspection under Ultra-Violet light does a reveal some tiny scattered retouchings in the mushrooms, in the background upper centre, in the wings of the duck on the left and centre, and in the head of the duck on the right. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame, in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

Over the years a large number of still life paintings by an unidentified Italian artist, active in Lombardy in the second half of the 17th Century, have been assigned to the 'Pseudo Fardella' or 'Painter of Carlo Torre'. However, stylistic comparisons with a painting discovered on an art market in Piacenza, Italy, which was signed in monogram: A.M.R., recently led to the identification of this prolific mushroom painter. Over half of the hundred or so paintings which can now be attributed to Angelo Maria Rossi, depict wild mushrooms, including the present work.

We are grateful to Alberto Crispo for suggesting an attribution to Angelo Maria Rossi on the basis of photographs. This attribution has kindly been confirmed by Giuseppe Cirillo.1
