Description

  • A riverside village, with numerous figures in rowing boats outside an inn
  • signed and indistinctly dated lower centre: TH(in compendium) Mans. 168.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 9 June 1972, lot 27.

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The original canvas has been laid down on a single panel, which is bevelled on all sides. The paint layer has been slightly abraded in the lower foreground, but otherwise, seems to be in fair condition. Small retouchings can be observed in the figures and boat to the left, in the roof centre background, and in the roofs of the houses on the right. The paint surface is under a dirty layer of varnish and there's some surface dirt. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals additional tiny retouchings in the sky centre right, in the figures on the quay, in the houses most left, and in the lower foreground left. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame with a red and white painted fillet, in fair condition. (MW)
