Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 11 July 1980, lot 107.

Condition

The actual painting is darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel is cradled and exists of two planks, joined horizontally, and no bevelling is visible to the reverse. The panel is flat. The paint surface is in good and stable condition, although somewhat abraded in the sky and foliage. No damages visible to the front, only some retouchings in the sky and a dark thin smudge lower left. The varnish layer is shiny, but discoloured. Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals additional retouchings in the sky, two diagonally retouched scratches in the foliage of the centre tree, retouchings along the join, in the thatched roofs; spots of retouching in the foreground and in the black horse. The group of figures is well preserved. Offered in an ebony parcel-gilt wood frame with a few chips and damages. (JD)
