Description
- Cornelis van de Velde
- A small English man-o' war firing a salute with small boats nearby
- remains of a signature lower centre on the piece of drift wood
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is warmer and deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has a stable relining (glue). No damages are apparent and the paint surface is in excellent condition. The craquelure pattern is somewhat coarse in places. No retouchings are visible to the naked eye, but inspection under Ultra-Violet light does reveal a small spot of retouching in the flank of the ship, small retouchings along the upper edge, and minor strengthening of the sails.
The paint surface is covered with a slightly dirty layer of varnish.
Offered in a plain parcel-gilt wood frame, in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note
Cornelis van de Velde was the son of Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707). Only a few works by Cornelis are known, which attest to a more decorative approach to the subject than his father's. He set up shop in Greenwich, where he may have died in 1717. He was buried next to his father in St. James's, Piccadilly.
