Description

  • Matthieu van Plattenberg
  • Shipping in a heavy storm along a rocky coast, a shipwreck in the foreground, figures coming to the rescue on the shore
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Inherited by the present owner from his aunt around 1950.

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas appears to be unlined. A horizontal fold is slightly visible in the centre. No major damages are apparent. There is fine craquelure throughout which is beginning to lift in some areas, resulting in tiny scattered losses along the lower edge, and in the lower centre right. Retouchings can be observed in the sky throughout, and along the lower edge. Otherwise, the paint layer is in good condition, and the impasto and texture have been wonderfully preserved. The paint surface is under a shiny and dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings, and reveals additional substantial retouchings in the sky, and a few tiny ones in the sea lower left, around the shipwreck, and in the mountain centre right. Offered in a decorative wood frame with gilt plaster moulding, in good condition. (MW)
