Description
- Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem
- An Italianate wooded landscape with shepherds herding their sheep and cattle
- signed and dated lower left: Berghem .f. 1655
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Major Michael Leatham;
By whom sold, London, Christie's, 9 June 1972, lot 74.
Condition
The actual paint is less red and less blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has a slightly stiff relining, which has somewhat flattened the paint surface. No damages are apparent, but the paint layer is abraded throughout, particularly in the background. Some small scattered retouchings are visible to the naked eye, in the sky, in the foliage upper left, in the foreground lower right, and minor strengthening can be observed in the cattle. The paint surface is under a very dirty and glossy layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is largely impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but does reveal a more recently retouched diagonal surface scratch to the centre left.
Offered in a plain red painted wood frame with gilt fillets, in good condition. (MW)
