Description
- Jan de Vos the Younger
- An extensive river landscape with a view of Rhenen, figures resting in the foreground
- oil on panel, the reverse with an unidentified panel maker's mark
Condition
The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel consists of 2 planks, joined horizontally, and is bevelled on all but the left sides. The panel has an unknown panel mark on the reverse. The join has been reinforced with 5 small battons on the reverse. A small horizontal crack of approx. 10 cm. in the lower left corner, which has been retouched to the front, has been reinforced with 2 smaller battons.
Slight abrasion is visible in the sky, allowing the underground to show slightly through. Otherwise, the paint layer seems to be in good condition. Small retouchings can be observed along the join and crack in the lower right corner, in the bank over the river lower right, throughout in the sky and in the foreground lower left. The paint surface is under a thick and glossy, but reasonably clear layer of varnish.
Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is largely impeded by the varnish layer: it does confirm the aforesaid, but reveals no further retouchings.
Offered in a Dutch ebonised wood frame, in good condition. (MW)
