Condition

The actual painting is a lot warmer, less blue and more brown in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a firm relining. The paint layer is somewhat abraded, particularly in the brown and reddish hues of the figures and walls in the background, and of the barrel and bucket in the foreground. Old retouched paint losses can be observed in the centre and in the upper right corner. Spots of retouching are visible in the sky, to the upper right, in the background centre left, in the drapery in the foreground, in the stove, and in the skirt of the figure most right. The paint surface is covered with a dirty and discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is partly impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and furthermore, reveals minor strenthening in the foliage and flowers. Offered in a plain wood frame, with a few splits.(MW)
