Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Glerum, 17 May 2004, lot 24.
Condition
The actual painting is darker and less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The single panel is flat and stable, and bevelled on all sides. Two small repaired damages are visible along the upper edge, but otherwise, no damages seem to be apparent. Strengthening can be observed in the standing girl, in the children in the background to the right, and the clothes of the teacher. A few tiny spots of retouching are visible in the faces of the standing boys, and standing girl, and in the face of the teacher. The paint surface is under a very dirty and discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is largely impeded by the dirty varnish layer. It does reveal more recent retouchings, e.g. in the teacher's collar, in the standing girl, and in the ink pot, but there are probably more retouchings underneath the old varnish.
Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame, in good condition. (MW)
