Condition

The actual painting is somewhat deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and slightly bevelled on all sides. No damages seem to be apparent and the paint surface seems to be in good condition and recently cleaned. Small retouchings can be observed throughout, e.g. in the cobblestones in the foreground, in the doorway and windowsill centre right, in the background centre left, and in the woman centre right. Some strengthening is visible in the goats in the foreground. The paint surface is covered with a clear layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals additional extensive scattered tiny retouchings throughout. Offered in decorative carved and gilt wood frame, in good condition. (MW)
