Provenance

Anonymous sale, Zurich, Koller, 27 November/1 December 1984, lot 5039;
With Robert Noortman, Maastricht/London, by 1986;
Offered, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 1 June 1987, lot 63;
Private collection, The Netherlands.

Condition

The actual painting is warmer and greener in tone, and shows less contrast than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel seems to consist of one plank and is very lightly bowed, and bevelled on all sides. No damages seem to be apparent and the paint surface seems to be in good condition. Particularly the impasto brushwork in the highlights has been nicely preserved. A very thin vertical split can be seen running through the left half of the panel. Spots of retouching can be observed in the sky and in the centre background. Minor strengthening is visible in the cattle, sheep and figure in the foreground. The paint surface is covered with a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet confirms the aforesaid retouchings, and reveals additional tiny scattered retouchings in the sky and some strengthening in the lower right corner. Offered in a plain ebonised wood frame, in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

Begeyn started off his career painting Italianate harbour scenes. It was not until the 1670s that the influence of his master Nicolaes Berchem became fully manifest, as seen in this painting. However, both his more direct arrangement of colours and the uniform lighting attest to the artist's own personal style.
