Description

  • Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer
  • A still life with a tulip, hyacinths, daffodils, snake's head fritillary, opium poppies and other flowers in a glass vase on a stone ledge
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is slightly softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. Stretcher marks are slightly visible to the front. A small spot of retouching is visible in the upper left corner. The paint surface has grown thin in the background, mainly in the darker tones, and slightly in the reddish tones. Minor strengthening can be observed in the stems in the vase and upper centre. The paint surface is under a clear layer of varnish and covered with a dense craquelure pattern. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the retouchings as mentioned above, and reveals an additional small spot of retouching in the red flowers centre right. Offered in a plain red and gilt wood frame, with a few chips. (MW)
