Description

  • Simon de Vos
  • Alexander the Great wounded after the battle against Aspasioi in India (Plutarch, life of Alexander the Great)
  • oil on copper

Condition

The actual painting is softer and slightly less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single copper plate is slightly undulant. There is a large dent in the upper right corner, and a vertical scratch of approx. 15 cm. The painted surface seems to be in good condition. A few older paint losses, which have been somewhat crudely retouched, are visible in the upper centre in the sky, to the lower right, in the background centre left, and in the horse in the centre. Furthermore, tiny discoloured retouchings can be observed in the face and limbs of the central figure and in the face of the standing figure on the right. The paint surface has grown slightly thin in the darker tones. The paint surface is covered with a dull and slightly discoloured layer of varnish and there's a fine layer of surface dirt. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the retouchings as mentioned above and reveals additional small scattered retouchings in the sky. Offered in a later plain wood frame with gilt parcels, in fair condition. (MW)

We are grateful to Drs. Jan Kosten of the R.K.D., The Hague, for his suggestion of the subject.
