Description
- Tobias Verhaecht
- A mountainous landscape with travellers in the foreground and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah beyond
- oil on panel, tondo
Condition
The actual painting is slightly less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The single round panel is flat and stable, and is bevelled along the edges. A horizontal crack of approx. 10 cm along the lower edge, has been repaired and retouched. The paint surface seems to be in good condition. A spot of retouching is visible in the centre of the panel. Some minor strengthening can be observed in the figures in the foreground and in the buildings in the background. The paint surface is covered with a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and strengthening, and reveals additional small retouchings in the lower foreground and in the background upper centre and centre right. Offered in plain octagonal shaped wood frame with a gilt fillet, in good condition. (MW)
