Catalogue Note

The idea of Eric Ravilious' famous series of ten lithographs Submarines developed during his appointment as an official war artist during World War II. As he visited the base at Gosport in 1940, Ravilious drew the interior of submarine and their crew on exercise.

Submarines was one of the few large scale print projects undertaken during World War II. The War Artist Advisory Committee initially showed interest in Ravilious' proposed project of colour lithographs from the drawings he made. However, due to cost involved, did not pursue it. Instead, Ravilious published the series himself and paid for the printing of a small edition at W.S. Cowell in Ipswich.
