Catalogue Note

Jan van Kessel the Elder, whose miniaturist paintings of assemblages of insects, fruit and individual flowers are amongst the finest still-life paintings of their time, also executed a few very similar works in gouache on vellum.  Examples are in Worcester, Mass., and Amsterdam.1
