In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

Expressive heads such as those seen in this group of young chimney sweeps relate to Boilly's interest in social types, which in the later part of his career became almost a reaction to the many small bust-length portraits of his youth.  He became more interested in caricatures and têtes d'expression.  This study was preparatory for François Delpech's lithograph of the subject, made in 1824.

We are very grateful to Etienne Bréton for confirming the attribution, and providing the connection to the print.
