Description

  • Martin Johann Schmidt, called Kremser-Schmidt
  • Tobias and the Angel
  • Black chalk heightened with white chalk, on buff paper

Condition

The paper was originally blue and has discolored to brown over time. The horizontal strip of gray blue on the top is probably a result of the original dye accumulating there during the manufacture of the paper. There are some paper lines in the edges and some small brown stains, all visible in the illustration. In a beaded gilt-wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Kremser-Schmidt was the pupil of Gottlieb Starmayr.  He became a member of the Viennese Academy in 1768 and in 1787 executed the work for which he is most famous, the decoration of the parish chuch of Krems.  A comparable group of drawings executed in the same technique are in the Niederösterreichischen Landesmuseum, Vienna.1
