Catalogue Note
Jan van de Velde's fascination with night scenes, manifested in a number of his tonal prints dating from 1622 onwards, stems from Adam Elsheimer's nocturnal paintings and Hendrick Goudt's engravings after them. In the present sheet, his only known drawing of a night scene, van de Velde has developed a highly personal technique to render the effects of strong light contrasted with dark shadows without recourse to the large areas of black ink found in his and Goudt's nocturnal prints.
