Catalogue Note

Done from life, this gentle portrait of a young man, executed in red chalk, was possibly used by Lorenzo Lippi in oil paintings intended for private devotion depicting head and shoulders images of Saints.  Two of these are in private collections: a head of St. Lawrence, especially close in facial type to the present sheet, and a head of St. John the Baptist which is dated on the back of the canvas 1638.Stylistically, the drawing is reminiscent of the work of Vignali, a similarity which is also noted by d'Afflitto with regard to the painting of the head of St. Lawrence.
