Catalogue Note
The attribution has been confirmed by Sir Denis Mahon.
Of the drawings which passed to the Gennari family after Guercino's death, 136 were framed and displayed in the Casa Gennari or the Casino at Bel Poggio. Many, like the present sheet, were laid down on canvas, which would in turn have been supported on a stretcher: a manner of exhibiting drawings which was much favored in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.1
A counterproof of this drawing is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle (inv. no. 3137).2
