Catalogue Note

In the physionomy of the Madonna's face, this drawing resembles an altarpiece with the Madonna and Child and Saints in the Roman church of St. Gregorio al Celio.  The painting was begun by Roncalli in 1602 and completed the following year.  The figure of St. Anne is drawn on a separate sheet of paper, carefully joined to that on which the Madonna and Child are drawn, suggesting that the artist drastically altered the figure, or the spatial relationships within the figure group.
