Catalogue Note
This is a study for the figure of St. Romuald for the south octant of the cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence, a section of the decoration dedicated to Poverty and Humility. The identity of the sitter as Fra Stefano is confirmed by the authograph inscription on the verso of the drawing: 'Fra Stefano, procurator of the order, dressed as a Camaldolese hermit.' St. Romuald was the founder of the Camaldolites, a small independent order of Benedictines. Fra Stefano is holding a model of a church and the rosary, a symbol of St. Benedict. The majority of these black and red chalk portraits, which are spontaneous and vivid, were drawn by Federico during his visits to the Badia di Vallombrosa in the years 1576 and 1577. Most probably the present drawing was done at this time and Federico found the opportunity to insert the figure in the decoration of the cupola as he did with the Abbot of Vallombrosa, Niccolò Ungaro, who appears just below to the left near the figure of St. Francis.
The cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore was left unfinished at the death of Vasari in 1574. Federico was given the commission in 1575 and started work in August 1576. A copy of the present drawing is in the Louvre (inv.no.4558).
