Catalogue Note

Thomas Wijck's journey to Itay is not documented, but it is possible to deduce that he travelled there from works such as these.  The biographer Arnold Houbraken wrote of Wijck that he painted a number of views of harbours and markets populated with figures 'and behind the same showed large buildings and palaces drawn by himself from life in Italy.'  A comparable drawing by Wijck of a similar range of buildings has been identified as the Ripa Grande, Rome.1
