Catalogue Note
After His baptism Christ fasted in the desert for forty days. At the end of this period, He was tempted three times by the devil. Satan first appeared to Christ bearing rocks and said: 'If you are the son of God tell these stones to become bread'. It is this scene that Verhaecht illustrates in the present drawing, set in a rather verdant wilderness with the city of Jerusalem in the background.
