Catalogue Note

A number of large-scale head studies like this by De Wit are known, but these are particularly splendid examples, and are also in excellent condition.  Although such angels appear throughout the artist's characteristic ceiling paintings, these studies seem to have been made as independent works of art, rather than in preparation for a painted composition.  A very comparable drawing, dated 1738, was sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 14 November 2006, lot 158.
