Description

  • Andrea Appiani
  • three separate studies: a lunette with the marriage of jupiter and juno; a scene from roman history with women, children and soldiers pleading in front of an army; apollo and a nymph
  • All pencil with traces of indentation for transfer, within chalk framing lines

Condition

Only the lunette shaped drawing has been seen out of the frame. The condition of all three is very similar. The paper appears to be wrapped around a wooden board. The central section of the drawing is within ruled black framing lines. These sections appear to have discoloured to a beige (as opposed to being washed or toned to this darker colour). The rest of the sheet is a creamy colour. Possibly originally there was a piece of coloured paper to cover the outer section of the drawing creating a mount, now lost. They all have some foxing and surface dirt. The scene from Roman history appears less homogeneous in its discolaration and somehow more stained. They are all in their original carved and wooden gilt frames.
