- Watercolour over black chalk, within brown ink framing lines
Condition
Laid down. A small horizontal tear at the lower part of the left edge, and a small vertical line at the lower right (in the lower-most arch) where the paper appears to have been nibbled slightly by a worm, but this is barely noticeable. A small tear to the right of the upper edge. There are some very small isolated spots where the paper has thinned, but only visible when held to the light. There are some very slight grey spots to the lower right, but otherwise the sheet is clear. Sold in a carved and gilded wooden frame, nicely mounted.

There is no painted version of this subject, although a painting of a similar composition, depicting a sculpture gallery in the Baths of Caracalla, is at Marble Hill House, Richmond.1
