  • a pair of italian views: lake bracciano with a view of castello odescalchi; a mountainous landscape with a waterfall, near terni
  • Both pen and grey ink and watercolour, within a pair of black and grey framing lines;
    each bears pencil inscription and attribution, verso: Vue de la vallée et des grands/rochers au dessu de la Cascade/de Terni/Cassas and Vue du Château et d'une partie/du lac de Bracciano.  Campagna/de Rome/AJ.Cassas 

Condition

Both framed in modern frames. Lake: a small tear at the lower right corner, repaired neatly from the verso. Some very minor, pale fox marks, but barely noticeable. The condition is in all very good. Waterfall: a small nick to the upper left edge, and a slight area of disruption at the upper centre, otherwise in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

Cassas made a number of drawings of the spectacular landscape near Terni during his first trip to Italy, from 1779-1783, of which a group, executed in black chalk, are in albums in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Tours.1
