Condition

Framed. Some foxing, and a very slight yellowing of the sheet. What appears to be a liquid-type stain at the upper left corner. There is a vertical crease near the left edge, although this may be a fault in the paper rather than later damage. Overall, however, the drawing still makes a very good impression.

Catalogue Note

A small but distinguished section of Molijn's drawn oeuvre consists of highly atmospheric winter landscapes. A particularly fine drawing of this type was sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 17 November 1993 (lot 6), but since that time no other winter scene by the artist of comparable quality to this has appeared on the market. In this lively and characteristic example of the classic Dutch genre, the artist captures beautifully the sense of a cold, blustery day, and depicts figures engaged in a range typical activities: skating, sledging, and, in the foreground, ice-fishing.
