Catalogue Note

Another version of this composition, with some differences, was sold London, Phillips, 11 December 1990, lot 73, as Lucas Cranach the Younger. We are grateful to Dr. Werner Schade for pointing out that the prototype for both paintings appears to be Cranach the Elder's Holy Kinship in the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna (M. Friedländer & J. Rosenberg, The Paintings of Lucas Cranach, London 1978, pp. 75-6, cat. no. 34, reproduced).
