The canvas has a recent effective relining. The paint surface is in fair condition. Inspection under UV light reveals some scattered retouchings. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.

A 19th-century copy after the original self-portrait of 1790 in the Uffizzi Gallery, Florence (see Gli Uffizi, Catalogo Generale, Florence 1979, p. 1034, inv. no. 1001, reproduced).
