Condition

The canvas is unlined but still taut. Some paint losses and frame abrasion are present. Much of the impasto remains under the yellowed varnish. The painting would benefit from a clean. Minor scattered spots and retouchings flouresce under UV. Offered in a carved wood frame in fair condition.

We are grateful to Prof. Lino Moretti for endorsing the attribution to Longhi on the basis of photographs. The present work from around 1753 is one of three sketches for the large portrait of Francesco Grimani (1702-1779) found in the Palazzo Grimani Marcello, Venice (see E.Martini, La pittura veneziana del Settecento, Venezia 1964, colour plate XXX and pl. 303.
