Catalogue Note
According to legend, St James the Greater appeared to Ramiro I of Asturias in a dream promising the king victory in his forthcoming battle with the Moors. The saint is said to have appeared on a white charger at the Battle of Clavijo in 844 and helped the Catholic forces to defeat the much larger Moorish army lead by Emir of Cordoba. Thereafter the saint became known as Matamoros (Moor slayer) and this episode became an important part of his iconography. The broad rimmed pilgrim hat which he wears is reference to his shrine at Compostella which, as the burial place of Spain's patron saint, is an important pilgrimage site.
