Description

  • Saint Peter in Penitence
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface has some minor scattered losses, notably lower centre and also some frame abrasion along the outer edges. There are scattered retouchings throughout, some of which have discoloured; these are confirmed under UV light. Overall in fair condition but would benefit from some restoration. Offered in a modern gilt wood frame which is quite damaged.

Catalogue Note

The scene is taken from Mark's Gospel (Mark 14:66-72), and shows Saint Peter repenting after he had declared three times before the cock crowed that he was not a follower of Christ. Jesus had predicted Peter's denial during the Last Supper earlier that evening.
