Catalogue Note
The composition relates to Carreño's numerous depictions of Charles II in which, throughout his youth, the sitter is represented in the same pose, his left hand resting on the same table and his right hand grasping a piece of paper. The present work depicts Charles as he looked in the early 1680s, about the age of twenty, and most closely resembles Carreño's portrait of him of c. 1680-5 in Madrid, Museo del Prado (see A.E. Pérez Sánchez, Juan Carreño de Miranda, Avilés 1985, reproduced p. 187, plate 92).
