Description
- Pieter Pietersz. Lastman
- Joseph's brothers returning to Jacob bearing gifts
- oil on panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, New York, Reese Palley Inc., 18 January 1963, lot 85, as Pieter Lastman.
Condition
The panel has been cradled to the reverse, making it difficult to determine whether the two horizontal lines on the front, one approximately 10 cm from the upper edge and the other approximately 20 cm from the lower edge, are splits or joins. Along the former the paint has started to lift and on the right of this split/join the paint is coming off. There are other losses which are visible in the catalogue illustration. Scattered retouchings are visible to the naked eye, in particular in the areas of paint loss, and these are confirmed under UV light. The painting is a little dirty. Offered in a gilt wood frame with some knocks.
