Catalogue Note
Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter (1607–1676) was Lieutenant-Admiral-General of the United Provinces. He is best known for his major victory at the battle of Medway during the second Anglo-Dutch war of the 17th century and was well loved by his soldiers who referred to him as Bestevaêr, meaning 'grandfather'.
The composition derives from Bol's signed and dated original found in the Mauritshuis, The Hague (inv. no. 585), of which there are numerous versions.
