Description

  • An allegory with a young nobleman torn between philsophy and earthly vanities, possibly the young Hercules at the cross-roads
  • oil on canvas laid on panel

Condition

The canvas has been laid on panel and as a result the paint surface is quite flat. It is a little thin in areas but secure with fine cracquelure throughout and under a fairly dirty varnish. There are fairly extensive scattered retouchings visible to the naked eye and these are confirmed under UV light. Offered in a modern parcel-gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

The subject of this mythological scene may be Hercules at a cross-roads choosing between the paths of Virtue and of Vice, which are personified by the two beckoning female figures (the former clothed and the latter semi-naked). Hercules chose Virtue.
