Condition
STRUCTURE
The panel appears to be in good condition.
PAINT SURFACE
The work has suffered from bitumen separation in the darker areas of the painting, particularly to the lower centre of the panel, in the sitter's costume, and there is a heavy craquelure in these related areas. It may be noted that the paint surface is stable and that sitters face is unaffected by this condition.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the condition mentioned above and reveals a discoloured varnish overall.
FRAME
Held in a gilded wooden frame.

Catalogue Note
Robert Balmanno, along with William Blake, was a close friend of Fuseli's and one of his executors. This work appears to derive from the portrait in the Paul Mellon Collection (Center for British Art, Yale University), painted in 1817.
